Gerald spent the night at a hotel nearby. In the morning he pulled on the clothes heâd been wearing the previous day, rushed his breakfast, and hurried downstairs to find Fry waiting on the street outside. Ruby and Sam were in the back of the Rolls. Gerald climbed in beside them.
âThis is very nice,â Ruby said, pushing her shoulders into the leather luxury of the backseat. âI could get used to this.â
âI guess,â Gerald said. âBut it has its drawbacks.â
Fry dropped into the driverâs seat and slammed the door. He flung his cap onto the passenger seat and flicked a switch on the dashboard. His muttering was silenced when the privacy screen behind his head reached the ceiling.
Ruby tried to suppress a giggle.
âWho is that guy?â Sam asked. âHe hasnât said a word to us since he picked us up.â
Gerald shook his head. âYou know how I inherited a bunch of stuff?â
âYeah.â
âWell, I got him as well.â
The Rolls eased into the traffic and they started the journey out of London.
âSo your folks were okay with you coming away?â
Ruby nodded. âDad did some work with the Archer Foundation once. He spoke with Mr. Prisk and they were fine.â
âYou know how they are,â Sam said as he fiddled with the switches on the back of the front seat. A panel slid aside, revealing a TV screen. âAlways wanting to know where you are, who youâre with.â
Gerald had a vision of Vi and Eddie bolting from the church hall in a rush to board the jet to get to the super-yacht in the Caribbean.
âNope,â Gerald said. âCanât say Iâve noticed it.â
âAre your parents missing you, dâyou think?â Ruby asked.
Gerald chewed on this for a bit.
âAt the moment Iâm thinking of adopting your parents,â Gerald said. âIâm part of the family, remember.â
It didnât take Fry long to have them out of London, and soon they were cruising along country roads.
It was a brilliant sunny day and Gerald gazed out the window as hedgerows and stands of oak trees flashed by.
Ruby broke into his reverie.
âMajor Pilkington is our bad guy, then?â
Gerald shuffled around to face her.
âWell, sure. He said he had the diamond locked away at Beaconsfield.â
âI guess.â
Sam looked at his sister.
âWhat do you mean âI guessâ?â he said. âHow much more obvious can it get?â
âMaybe. But what about the thin man?â
âHow do you mean?â
âDonât you think itâs a bit odd that two people are looking for this diamond casket thing?â
âWhat are you saying?â Gerald asked. âThat theyâre working together?â
âWhy not?â Ruby said. âMaybe the major hired the thin man to do the rough stuff. You know, to be the muscle. Heâs after Gerald because he thinks Gerald knows where this casket is.â
âI dunno,â Sam said. âThe major didnât come across as the type whoâd hire someone to stick a knife in your ribs.â
âYeah,â Gerald said. âBut I canât figure out why the thin man isnât interested in the diamond itself. Itâs worth a stack of money.â
âBecause the major already has the diamond, dopey,â Ruby said.
